[MilCom] AWACS correlation check

Could someone explain what is happening when an AWACS does a correlation
check.

With the passing of track data I would assume they are cross checking their
radar data with other platforms.  Is that correct?  Are they checking their
picture with ATC , Huntress or other AWACS?

I've heard them doing this for years but never come across a thorough
explanation of what exactly is happening.
