The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and embarked Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 12 staff departed Naval Station Norfolk to begin Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), Jan 8. Theodore Roosevelt will join the rest of the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG) to conduct COMPTUEX, which tests TRCSG's ability to effectively react to real-world scenarios and perform as an integrated unit. "Carrier Strike Group 4 is evaluating how the battle group defends itself, how it projects power and how well they execute pre-planned responses to multiple types of scenarios," said Master Chief Cryptologic Technician (Technical) Todd Womack, CSG 4's senior enlisted advisor, from Cottonwood, Alabama. Throughout COMPTUEX, Theodore Roosevelt will face training scenarios that simulate real-world situations the ship could encounter during its upcoming deployment. "TR and her crew will be conducting numerous flight operations, identifying contacts and displaying the information to the entire strike group," said Operations Specialist 2nd Class Jeffery Lain, tactical data coordinator aboard TR. "We will be as tactical as possible while performing in a carrier environment during a realistic wartime scenario," said Lt. Jeffery Mayer, an F/A-18F Super Hornet pilot from the "Red Rippers" of Strike Fighter Attack Squadron (VFA) 11. Following the successful completion of COMPTUEX, CSG 4 will declare TR capable of worldwide operations and ready for its upcoming deployment. TRCSG is comprised of Carrier Strike Group 12 staff, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 2 staff, USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1, and the DESRON 2 ships; the guided-missile destroyers USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), USS Farragut (DDG 99), and USS Winston S. Kevin Loughmiller and Nick Adams stood on the soggy flightline at MacDill AFB recalling "a mindblowing" experience from a few days earlier. Adams, 27, is one of 14 Navy pilots who have come to Tampa from NAS Oceana in Virginia to train on how to fly and fight variations of the F-18 Hornet. Loughmiller is one of 22 trainers showing them how it's done. While Friday morning's practice was a good learning experience, Adams said that training to perform low-level close air support - hitting targets who are engaged with friendly troops in contact with the enemy - is something else entirely. "It's pretty mind blowing, really," said Adams of flying at 200 feet above the ground. At higher altitudes, "when you are going fast, you do not have the ground rush, but the lower you get, the faster stuff gets moving. It is kind of mind-blowing being that close to the ground and seeing stuff whizzing by you." The goal of the training, which has created quite a stir in the neighborhoods near MacDill and along the 70-mile route to Avon Park, is to give new pilots the best real-world experience they can find, said Loughmiller, an experienced combat pilot. Avon Park is "a fantastic range," said Navy Lt. Nate Miller, 31, a trainer with nine years in uniform. It takes only about 10 minutes for the fast-movers to make their way down to the range, a 106,000-acre facility located south-southeast of Tampa in Polk and Highlands counties. The Navy brought 14 fighters to Tampa, said Miller, including the C and D models, which are the older Hornets, and the E and F models, which are newer and called Super Hornets. Aside from pilots, the Navy brought 150 "maintainers," those who help keep the planes working. The training mission in Tampa is an international endeavor, said Miller, with pilots from the French Navy and the British and Swiss air forces taking part as trainers. There are also Dutch troops, known as joint terminal air controllers, who are on the ground in Avon Park, helping guide the pilots onto their targets. The training mission lasts until Jan. 17. Before heading into the Detached Unit Center at MacDill, which serves as a mobile command center for visiting aircrews, Loughmiller talks about what advice he gives to his students. "Make sure you are bombing the right target," said Loughmiller. "That's No. 1. "No. 2 is follow the check list. Those are the two best pieces of advice." _haltman at tampatrib.com_ (mailto:haltman at tampatrib.com) (813) 259-7629 AL STERN Satellite Beach FL AllanStern at aol.com http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MilRadioComms http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HFmonitors http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FloridaMilcom http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FloridaComms http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SpaceCoastComms http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FloridaPlanespotting http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CivilAirlineComms http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ScanMarine ********************************************************** __._,_.___ ____________________________________ Posted by: AllanStern at aol.com ____________________________________ ********************************************************************** Respond to postings via the RadioMonitors Group, not by private Email. ********************************************************************** (https://groups.yahoo.com/neo;_ylc=X3oDMTJkNzBjbGNoBF9TAzk3NDc2NTkwBGdycElkAzg3NTE3ODYEZ3Jwc3BJZAMxNzA1MDYzMTA4BHNlYwNmdHIEc2xrA2dmcARzdGltZQMxNDIwODQ1 NjQ4) __,_._,___ From milair at mailman.qth.net Sat Jan 10 03:00:09 2015 From: milair at mailman.qth.net (AllanStern--- via MilAir) Date: Sat, 10 Jan 2015 03:00:09 -0500 Subject: [MilAir] Fwd: [FloridaComms] REMINDER: Falcon 9 Launch this morning. Residents in neighborhoods surrounding NAS Jax, Outlying Landing Field Whitehouse and Pinecastle Range Complex may notice an increase in aircraft activity and noise during this training period starting Jan. 15 through Feb. 4. COMPTUEX, the cornerstone event for CSG-4, is an evaluation that tests the mission-readiness of deployable assets as it relates to their ability to react to training scenarios and perform as an integrated unit. Training scenarios include simulated surface, air, undersea, strike and electronic attacks. ?Carrier Strike Group 4 is evaluating how the battle group defends itself, how it projects power and how well it executes pre-planned responses to multiple types of scenarios,? said CTTCM Todd Womack, CSG-4?s Senior Enlisted Advisor from Cottonwood, Ala. TRCSG consists of CSG-12, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 2, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1, USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), USS Normandy (CG 60), USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81), USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98) and USS Farragut (DDG 99). Independent deployers USS McFaul (DDG 74) and USS Laboon (DDG 58) will also participate in the TRCSG COMPTUEX, which will serve as their deployment certification. Conducting COMPTUEX is a major undertaking. CSG-4 plans for months and employs a number of military and civilian personnel at sea, in the air and on land to prepare units to forward deploy in support and defense of national interests. ?We have 132 people onboard TR alone with, on average, six personnel on each of the escort ships. We have about 60 more Sailors and civilians on the beach supporting this evolution, not only as trainers and assessors, but as pilots for the simulated Opposition Forces (OPFOR) aircraft and Mobile Sea Range (MSR) vessels,? said Womack. ?As you can see, an evolution of this magnitude takes a lot of people and resources to make happen to ensure that the Battle Group is ready for whatever task they could possibly have assigned to them when on deployment.? COMPTUEX supports the Navy?s mission of training to improve capabilities of service members who are warfighters preparing to be ready to operate forward when the nation calls. Commanded by Rear Adm. Richard Butler, CSG-4 is a team of experienced Sailors, Marines, government civilians and reservists, who mentor, train and assess Atlantic Fleet combat forces to forward deploy. CSG-4?s experts shape the readiness of Atlantic Fleet CSGs, Expeditionary Strike Groups (ESG), Amphibious Readiness Groups (ARG) and Independent Deploying ships. Formerly known as Commander Strike Force Training Atlantic (CSFTL), CSG-4, along with subordinate commands, Tactical Training Group Atlantic (TTGL) and Expeditionary Warfare Training Group Atlantic (EWTGL), prepare every Atlantic-based CSG, ARG and Independent Deployer for sustained, forward-deployed, high tempo operations. Flying them will be Navy pilots who just finished two weeks of daily exercises at the Avon Park Air Force Range. The Navy contingent also included 22 instructors and 150 maintainers - or maintenance crew - from the Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia. Before they flew out - WUSF?s Bobbie O?Brien joined the naval aviators on MacDill?s flight-line. The daily roar of Navy F-18 jet engines is not a common sound around MacDill Air Force Base ? which is home to the Air Force KC-135 strato-tankers and 6th Air Mobility Wing. But Navy Lt. Nate Miller says MacDill and the nearby Avon Park range are ideal for the 14 pilots he?s training. MILLER: we?re basically here to train the new F-18 pilots who are going to go out in the fleet in the next probably about 5 to 6 months. The 31 year old pilot has done three deployments to Afghanistan -- the Navy calls them sea tours -- where he provided combat air support. Miller says all of their instructors have combat experience. MILLER: So we are teaching low altitude tactics how to fly basically between 200-500 feet for different ingress and egress out of a target area. We? re working close air support. Those are our two main basic training objectives ? the air to ground and close air support. REPORTER: YOU?RE DOING TRAINING RUNS BUT WHEN YOU THINK NAVY PILOTS YOU? RE KNOWN FOR HAVING TO LAND ON AIR CRAFT CARRIERS. MILLER: it?s when you come back to the boat the flying is very different. You know on my way home I have a lot to think about I?m going to have to have to go back and land on the boat which is very challenging and stressful, very rewarding but very challenging experience. REPORTER: DO YOU MARK OUT THE LENGTH OF AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER AND CHALLENGE YOUR TRAINEES TO LAND WITHIN THAT MARGIN. MILLER: We don?t do that here. We do that back at our Naval Air station Oceana. every single time you come back there?s basically a small box that?s on the runway and we kind of treat that as like practicing to land. On the runway are dozens of support personnel. Jessica Clayton is holds the rank of AM3 in the Navy. That stands for Airframe Structural Mechanic 3rd Class. Land O Lakes is actually home for her so she was disappointed with the 50 degree rainy weather. CLAYTON: I was ready to be sporting my flip flops and shorts coming from Virginia but not this time. REPORTER: SO WHAT?S IT LIKE DOING MAINTENANCE. CLAYTON: I love it. As somebody who is 20 years old without a college degree I feel like it?s a good way to put your foot in the world and shows that you can still make something out of yourself and contribute to society. REPORTER: AND BEING A WOMAN IN THE NAVY. CLAYTON: There?s not a real big difference. I mean you have to try a little harder but it?s worth it at the end of the day. She?s never served aboard an aircraft carrier ? so Clayton is really looking forward to her upcoming ?boat deck? ? a term for a 3 or 4 day detachment aboard ship. It?ll be several more months before pilot trainee, Lt. Nick Adams is assigned to a ship. He and Navy instructor Lt. Kevin Loughmiller had just returned from a flight. They still wore their flight helmets as they headed into a debriefing. LOUGHMILLER: strictly a training mission for him practicing laser guided weapons. We have some laser guided training grounds REPORTER: SO HOW DID IT GO FOR YOU? ADAMS: We haven?t had the debrief yet so we?ll se what he says there. REPORTER: SO WHEN YOU DID THE CLOSE AIR SUPPORT WHAT WAS IT LIKE FLYING DOWN AT 200 FEET IN THIS KIND OF JET? ADAMS: It?s pretty mind blowing. Really up at altitude when you?re fast you don?t? have the ground rush but the lower you get the faster stuff gets moving. It?s just kind of mind blowing being that close to the ground and seeing all that stuff move by you so fast. Once the 14 navy pilots have completed all their training, Lt. Miller says there is one last challenge. MILLER: at the very end they?ll do 16 arrested landings on an aircraft carrier and then we say ?Okay, you guys are ready to go out and be naval aviators.? Message-ID: TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. ? The North American Aerospace Defense Command and its geographical component, the Continental United States NORAD Region, will conduct exercise Falcon Virgo 15-04 Wednesday night through Friday morning, in the National Capital Region, Washington, D.C. Flights are scheduled to take place between midnight and 5:30 a.m. (EST) each day. In the event of inclement weather, the exercise will take place the following evening. If bad weather continues, officials will then make a decision to postpone or cancel the exercise. The exercise is comprised of a series of training flights held in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Capital Region Coordination Center, the Joint Air Defense Operations Center, Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard and CONR?s Eastern and Western Air Defense Sectors. Exercise Falcon Virgo is designed to hone NORAD?s intercept and identification operations as well as operationally test the NCR Visual Warning System and training personnel at the JADOC. Civil Air Patrol aircraft and a U.S. Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter will participate in the exercise. These exercises are carefully planned and closely controlled to ensure CONR ?s rapid response capability. NORAD has conducted exercise flights of this nature throughout the U.S. and Canada since the start of Operation Noble Eagle, the command?s response to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. As the continental United States (CONUS) geographical component of the bi-national command NORAD, CONR provides airspace surveillance and control, and directs air sovereignty activities for the CONUS region. CONR and its assigned Air Force and Army assets throughout the country ensure air safety and security against potential air threats. Since Sept. 11, 2001, CONR fighters have responded to more than 5,000 possible air threats in the United States and have flown more than 62,500 sorties with the support of Airborne Warning and Control System and air -to-air-refueling aircraft. For more information on Falcon Virgo exercises, please contact CONR Public Affairs at (850) 283-8080, or the NORAD Public Affairs Office at (719) 554-6889. Sgt. Brandon Shapiro 6th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs January 20, 2015 MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AFNS) ? The 6th Air Mobility Wing here hosted a massive 300 sortie Navy F/A-18 pilot training exercise from Jan. 4-17. F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornets from Strike-Fighter Squadron ONE ZERO SIX (VFA-106), a Navy training squadron, chose MacDill Air Force Base because of its top-notch accommodations, geographical location, and proximity to training specific complexes. This is the first of numerous cross-service exercises scheduled for 2015. VFA-106 is responsible for preparing the finest strike fighter aircrew and maintenance professionals for the fleet in support of combat operations around the world. "The Deployed Unit Complex located at MacDill has great facilities that are able to accommodate our training, operations, and maintenance efforts," said Navy Lt. Nathan Miller, a VFA-106 instructor pilot. "MacDill is also an ideal location because of it nearness to the Avon Park Range Complex, where all of our training takes place." The large-scale exercise focused the nearly 300 flights around the air-to-ground training phase, where new pilots tested their skills at a bombing range. During their immersion, the VFA-106 was able to successfully introduce future F/A-18 pilots to the critical training that will be demanded of them once they go to their operational squadrons. "MacDill AFB supported our operations and personnel with extreme professionalism and dedication," Miller said. "We were able to create a great working relationship that allowed us to maximize our training efforts and pave the way for future operations with the 6th [Air Mobility Wing]." On top of the success of the training exercise was an overwhelming positive outcry from the local community. "With such a fantastic community support system, we want to do all we can to give back. For some, all it takes is a couple of weeks of the world's finest pilots showcasing their second-to-none skills," said 2nd Lt. Patrick Gargan, the 6th AMW media operation officer. "The 6th Air Mobility Wing is proud to host such events that serve so many valuable purposes. We are extremely excited at this year's upcoming schedule of exercises." ------------------------------------------------------ Photo Captions (larger, high-res versions can be viewed or downloaded at the URLs below each caption): 1.
