The Blue Angels are in town for the Jones Beach Air Show this weekend. This
afternoon I took one of the unmarked cars and drove out to the road that
runs the perimeter of Republic Airport in Farmingdale. Republic is one of
the busiest airports in the state except it is known as Long Island's
executive airport as well as an active General Aviation airport...no big
commercial airliners...mostly Lear jets, Cessnas, and such. It is also the
home to the Airpower Museum.
In any event, there is a road that runs the perimeter of the field.... and
because there are no big commercial airliners coming and going the fence is
all of 6-8 feet from the road. So, I park at the end of the Runway 14 and
sure enough at about 2:15PM while monitoring the tower I hear them give the
Blue Angels clearance to take off.... 4 took off at once and flew right over
my head at about 500 feet. The the remaining two took off and where wheels
up halfway down the runway and they split off in opposite directions. I
assume they went out to the beach to practice.
I am going to try to take my lunch hour around the same time tomorrow, but I
am not sure if I should set up at the airport or the beach. The beach is
probably a better bet.
If anybody can come up with the "SHOW BOSS" frequency please post it, last
year it was: 128.2500
