I have a Yaesu VR-500. Ergonomics are good, the size is great. Display
is well layed-out and easy to read, although the backlighting could be a
bit brighter. The programming is relatively simple, even more so with
the software, which is almost a necessity, given the radio's 1000
frequency capacity.

The receiver is ok, but nowhere near as good as, say, the Icom R2, which
is a triple-conversion reciever. Volume is not as good as it could be on
the VR-500. Finally, the scanning feature is very limited. In this
department, Bearcat wins hands down. The VR-500 is an awkard radio to
use as a scanning receiver. Except for its convenient size and wide
coverage, I'm not sure I'd want to depend on it as a primary monitoring
radio.

I would recommend checking out the reviews at www.strongsignals.net where
you will find very comprehensive evaluations of many radios.
