Subject: An announcement about Operation Care
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Between one thing and another, MARA has been having a hard time filling
all the shifts at the Operation Care coffee stop, located on the southbound
side of US-131, just north of 10-Mile Road in Rockford, Mi.
To remedy this situation, the MARA membership has decided to offer to
share the proceeds with other local clubs.
If you sign up for a slot (most shifts have 2 slots), you may designate a
bona-fide local club to receive 2.5% of the weekend's total net income.
To fill a slot, you must have an Amateur Radio callsign, and provide a
way for us to contact you to verify your sign-up. Please only sign up if you
will actually be there, as we cannot afford no-shows.
For example; Tom X8XXX and Bill Y8YYY both work the midnight to 4:00 AM
shift, and both designate the ARGYL club as the benefiting club. That would
be 2.5% plus 2.5% equals 5%. If the weekend brings in $400 of net donations
(after the cost of cookies, coffee, ice, etc.), then MARA would issue a
check to ARGYL for $20.
If you cannot work a 4-hour shift, but would still like to help, we have
driving slots available. To fill a driving slot, you would have to pick up a
non-driving volunteer (on the NW side of G.R.), and bring them to the Rest
Area, --or-- pick them up at the Rest Area, and bring them home. Sorry, we
are not prepared to furnish rides for any new non-driving volunteers.
Please do not bring anything to pass out to the travelers, the State is
very particular about food, literature, etc. All supplies will be furnished
by MARA.
This Operation Care coffee stop is more of a public service than it is a
money-maker. The travelers appreciate us being there, and often say so. I
personally believe this to be a very fair and equitable division of
proceeds, and yet leaves a little money to cover MARA's hidden costs.
Please feel free to pass this announcement on as you see fit.
For further information, I am including the form letter composed by our
club Secretary, immediately below. The easiest way to sign up is by using
our web-page at http://www.w8usa.org/Opsignup.htm
Thank-you,
Jim Cordes ki8jd; MARA President and Operation Care Chairman

We of the Michigan Amateur Radio Alliance have been operating Operation
Care Coffee Stops, since the spring of 1995. Due to members taking
vacations, and some ailments amongst our members, we are falling short of
the required volunteers to keep Operation care up and running during the
Holiday weekends. To help keep the Operation up and running, and also
generate funds for your club, we at Mara have decided to offer 2 ½ % of the
Net profits from the Operation Care Coffee Stop, Labor Day operation, for
each volunteer of your club who fills a shift. This is a great way to meet
other people of the great state of Michigan, and also help keep wary
motorists alert and awake during their travels. If you'd like to get a
better understanding of what goes on, please visit our web site,
http://www.w8usa.org.
If you think this is something you would like your members to get involved
with, please have them select an open shift on or after August 21, 2006.
If you have any other questions or comments, please feel free to contact me
at the below phone number.
Jim KI8JD 459-1195, after 7:00PM Monday through Friday.
I firmly believe this is something that can benefit not only our individual
clubs, but also the public.
Thank you for your time,
James Cordes KI8JD
