BLANK SUN: For the first time since January 1998, the sunspot number is
zero. There are no spots on the sun--none! This means solar activity should
remain low, and auroras are unlikely.

MORNING PLANETS: Have you looked at the dawn sky lately? It's sparkling with
bright stars and planets: Sirius, Venus, Saturn, Castor and Pollux. Now
another planet is joining the show: giant Jupiter. Tunç Tezel of Bursa,
Turkey, took this picture of Jupiter rising about 30 minutes before the sun
on Oct. 4th:

Every morning this month Jupiter gets easier to see. It's moving farther
from the sun, climbing higher in the morning sky. On Nov. 4th it will have a
startling close encounter with Venus. Stay tuned!

STRANGE RAINBOWS: Add sunlight to water droplets and what do you get? A
lovely rainbow. Usually you see rainbows arcing across the sky after a rain
shower, but you can find rainbows in other places, too, like grass or
spider's webs. All you need is dew:
