I was six years old when the worst tornado in Michigan's history ripped up
everything in its path from Coldwater Road in Genesee county all the way to Port
Huron. Several hundred lost their lives and many millions of dollars in damage
was done. I remember seeing the sky with some black and purplish tinged clouds
just north of our home. My mother told me to get inside the house and stay
there. My father was in Canada on a fishing trip at the time.
The tornado tracked one mile north of our home. I remember seeing the damage as
my parents drove around in their car. I remember seeing the Flint Journal
newspaper they kep for many years when I would go into the attic and spot it in
a box.
The destructive power of these storms is incalculable and we should always take
every 'watch' and 'warning' seriously. A case of apathy can easily be fatal! Do
not think that it can not happen to you, it can, and just may! Better to error
on the side of taking proper precautions, than to have somebody cash in your
life insurance policy to pay the funeral expenses.
