To all Section Staff, Michigan Clubs, Net Managers, ARES/RACES members and
amateurs in the state of Michigan

I am sure you have all heard by now that our Section Manager has resigned.

I have a story I would like to share with all of you.

Back in August 2001 there was a lot of concern in the Michigan Section. If
Dick W8FQT were to decide not to run in December 2001, for Section Manager
what we, the Michigan Section would do.

There were 2 ASM's, 1 STM, 1 SEC and 1 DEC sitting around a camp fire in the
middle of nowhere !

At that time we all decided that there was no way, that any one of us could
fill his position. Dick put in so many hours, and so much personal time and
effort into our Section that we all felt there was no way to fill his shoes,
I can't tell you how happy we were that he decided to stay on another term
for us.

At that campfire we all made a pact that if Dick didn't run again for
Section Manager in 2001, that one of us would hold the title and the rest of
us would pitch in and help out, just as we have always done in this
Section. I think the term was "teamwork" which is what Dick was teaching
us over all these years.

Now we are at that point where our Section Manager has resigned, and I am
sure a lot of you are wondering what now will take place.

I have had 2 VERY long meetings in person with Dick and Sandy since Dick
informed me about the changes that were about to take place. Sandy will be
staying on as our club coordinator.

I guess I am going to be the one to hold the title and I look forward to
continuing to serve you to the best of my ability.

After my first meeting with Dick I arrived home to find my phone ringing.
It was Roger Edwards WB8WJV our ASM for Administration. Roger reminded me
about the campfire and said that he would stay on and help in any way he
can. I didn't even get to hang up the phone and the rest of our Section
started calling to inform me, that they were still there, and wanted to let
me know that they were ready to go and each one talked about that night at
the campfire..

We really haven't lost our Section Manager. Dick has moved on to Great
Lakes Vice Director, and if he does (and we all know he will) as great of
job with our Division, as he has done in our state, with Gary Johnston KI4LA
as our Director we should have one of the best Divisions in the US. Dick
has already informed me that he is still here in the state and will help in
any way he can. I have to state myself, that serving under Dick has been a
real experience and joy. One I will never forget. I wish to thank him for
all his years as our Section Manager and for passing his knowledge on to us,
we the Michigan Section.

Questions have started coming in on my email as to what this means here in
Michigan and what changes will be taking place. I can only tell you at this
time everything is as it was before and there are no immediate plans to
change anything. We have some positions to fill, but your Michigan Section
staff is not going away and our teamwork efforts are still in effect. On
behalf of the entire staff I wish to send my many thanks to everyone for
their cooperation, and efforts that they have applied towards this section !

I can only ask all of you at this time to please send Dick and George an
email and thank them yourselves. They have devoted many hours to this hobby
on our behalf, and I can only hope that you will take a few minutes of your
time and send them a letter thanking them.

To: Michigan Section Staff July 23, 2002

Emergency Coordinators

Net Managers

During last weekends ARRL Board of Directors Meeting, George Race, WB8BGY
tendered his resignation as Great Lakes Division Director. Gary Johnston,
KI4LA, of Edgewood Kentucky was elected by, Board Action, to fill the
vacancy.

League President Jim Haynie, W5JBP appointed me to serve as Great Lakes
Division Vice Director. Gary and I will be candidates in this Fall's
election to serve for the 2003-2005 Term.

I would like to ask all of you to join me in thanking George for his twelve
years of Service to the ARRL Board as well as his many years of service to
the Michigan Section.

The last vote cast by George was in support of keeping the Michigan Section
News and Contest Scores in QST. Unfortunately that issue was defeated by a 9
to 6 vote. George's vote was in support of the feelings of the three Section
Managers in the Division as well as a majority of ARRL Members. George
states that this Board Action was partially responsible for his decision to
resign. More details can be found on the ARRL Website.

I am also please to announce that Debbie Kirkbride, KA8YKK of Bay City, will
serve as Michigan Section Manager for the balance of my term, through 2003.
Debbie has served the Section as a District Emergency Coordinator in
Mid-Michigan as well as Section Emergency Coordinator and State RACES
Officer for the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management Division. Her
most recent appointment has been as an Assistant Section Manager for Amateur
Radio Public Service Corps (ARPSC) with responsibility for the Section
Emergency Services. Debbie can be reached via email at [email protected]

I am confident that you will give Debbie the same cooperation that you have
given me over the years and I ask you to welcome her to this new position of
responsibility as a member of the Michigan Section Leadership Team.

I am pleased to have been given the opportunity to serve as Michigan Section
Manager for the last five years and I thank all of you for your cooperation
and friendship. It has been a very rewarding experience for me personally
and I have learned a lot from all of you. I appreciate your participation in
our Section Programs and ask that you continue to serve your Section with
pride in what you do. You have made my job a joy and have helped to build a
solid team in Michigan that allows us to serve the public as well as local
and state government.

I look forward to serving you and the Amateurs in the States of Ohio and
Kentucky as Great Lakes Division Vice Director and I want you to know that
you may feel free to contact me, at any time, if I can be of service to you.
I appreciate the confidence that Director Gary Johnson and President Jim
Haynie have shown in my ability to serve you and I shall always do whatever
I can, in the best interest of all of Amateur Radio.
