[MFJ-Ameritron] re: buying mfj tuner

I'm thinking of buying a mfj-969 roller inductor tuner. But I hear horror 
stories about them not working when they come out of the box. I was told I 
should open the tuner and inspect to see if all the solder joints and no 
loose wires are present. Is this true?
I have in the past bought a used mfj tuner and found it to be junk, only 
because of mis-use or neglect. That's why I'm buying new. When I buy this 
tuner what should I be doing before I use it? Or what should I be looking 
for?
