I8/DF2ZC (JM89BC) Report

Hello All,

During my recent holiday - yes, it was no expedition but a family
holiday(!) - in Amantea/Calabria in
JM89BC I was QRV with my standard portable equipment wellknown from other
similar activities: TS2000, 4CX250B
with some 300 W out, MGF1302 preamp and the 9 ele yagi (Tonna). During most
of the mornings and evenings I was
CQing on .370 - with good success, some 75 complete QSOs are in log now.

The QTH in Amantea was about 160 m ASL with a great take-off to the
Tyrrenean Sea. Only QTFs between 010 and 180 were
blocked by steep hills. Therefore working anyone in these directions was
only possible by side-/backscatter. You can see

As far as I recall I sooner or later completed with nearly every station
that I copied calling me. Though,
I'm very sorry for the few exceptions: PE2RMI (twice NC), OZ1LPR (1b only),
OZ1PIF (twice NC), GW3LEW
(no more refls around noon at 2170 km). On the other hand I'm quite happy
working some QRP stations such as G0CUH
and OZ5AGJ at distances close or beyond 2000 km.

in JM89CG and regularly QRV on FSK.

On Oct. 23rd I started my announced activation of JM87, equipment was
TS2000, Transistor PA (thanks to DL8EBW for
letting it to me for this purpose) with some 150 watts out, MGF1302 and the
9 ele. Power came from a 80-Ah-Battery.
>From time to time I reduced the output to about 100 W only to save battery
time. After a 2-hour-drive and 250 km
(no speed limits at night) I arrived in JM87BX Brancaleone Superiore at 06h
local when it was still pitchblack.
Only with the help of my GPS receiver I found the place Frank, DH7FB, had
worked from in May this year and began setting
up the station in the headlights of the car. I had strange company by some
locals walking around there with their rifles
and doing rabbit hunting. What might they have thought of the strange German
putting up an antenna at his car in the
early morning...

Another 22 stations now have JM87 marked as worked. The spot I worked from
is really o.k. for MS for directions F...OK
as well as East and West. I will put some more info and JPGs on

Maybe some others can be lured into activating it themselves? The GPS data
of the exact place are:

16° 5'  47,9" E

Next time I will be on holiday in JM87 I sure will go to work from JM87
again - not likely in 2005 (maybe at short notice
only) but VERY likely in 2006.
