Hi Kenneth
First, the simple answer - yes, 2 x 9 element yagis are quite adequate for
ms on 2m. If you feed 100w or more into them you should get some results.
And no, 2 x 19 ele on 70cms is unlikely to be successful. The returns on
70cms are very marginal indeed and you'll need more metalwork, high power
and a really hot receiver. Six metre operation can be very productive.
Can I stress the importance of doing lots of listening before you transmit
please. Otherwise unwittingly you might mess up someone else's half complete
qso.
There are random, or sporadic meteors flying past all the time, all day
every day. However, some times like early morning are better than others,
like late afternoon.
But your best bet as a beginner is to wait for a "shower". These are annual
events which can be predicted from an historical base. The next one is the
Leonids and is likely to peak on November 17th, depending on whose
prediction you believe. In recent years it has produced excellent results.
Try beaming south between 0200 and 0300, or east between 0500 and 0700 or
southeast between 0700 and 1000. These are the favoured directions due to
the geometry of the meteor path, and each shower will be different.
There is a wealth of information at www.qsl.net/dk3xt and I recommend this
site among others.
Many qso's are made by pre-arranged skeds. Keep an eye on this reflector, on
the dx cluster, and on an occasional net on 14.345MHz.
