[Meteor-Scatter] The story of JO39

Hi Folks!
Just a short note about my trip to Norway:
During the peak i operated together with Stefan, LA0BY from JO49ML (see his=
report on the homepage). Early afternoon of the 14th we left the Lifjell c=
ottage and after 1.5h i arrived in JO39 looking for a place to operate from=
. It took 2h to find a place on a small, steep road in JO39XJ, just 500m fr=
om the border, on a farm ground.=20
The farmer allowed me to operate on a very small place just beside the road=
. It was quite difficult to setup the station on this limited area and also=
i was very tired from the 'night shift' before, but i wanted to show up on=
the .100 as announced. The 1st CQ was given out at 20,10z and soon DL2ARD =
was worked easily. HA6NQ came in with a 20 sec. burst but it ended NC and i=
t was the same with DF8IK. From 2235 to 2340 i called CQ but obviously no r=
eply.
The next morning i started late at 0600 with 'CQ S' on 144.100 but no stati=
on was heard for 1h. At 0715 WSJT was running on 144.370.
I could easily follow QSO's from DL/F/OM/OE/HB9 stations and started to cal=
l CQ. As the reflections were not long and often i did not use a QSY proced=
ere which worked perfectly from JO49ML. Within the next 6h i did not manage=
a single QSO and closed the station quite frustrated at 1325.
In the evening Stefan called me by GSM and told me that several stations ha=
ve claimed to work me in FSK41... Funny, as i never send RRR or even a r-re=
port. At this point i made the decision to stop my activity from JO39 and c=
oncentrate on my job as a pathfinder for coming expeditions. Several places=
were checked but the take-off even at 1000m asl still remains fair. The di=
fference is more or less only in the available azimut.
About FSK441/HSCW: WSJT works fine e.g. a qso with UT5JCW was close to be c=
ompleted over 2340km from JO49 but it is nonsense to stay on=20
the 'center of activity' 144.370. We have to find a way for QSY if it comes=
to a meteor shower. In JO49 i have send 'CQ LA0BY/P QSY 388' and that work=
s fine.
But i feel the same as Stefan wrote in his JO49 report: Looking on the scre=
en does not give me the thrill as decoding the bursts with the own 'small c=
omputer'... Especially if you have to deal with conditions like in JO39.
However i will return to the beautiful scenery of this lovely
country...with or without the radio.
Thanks to Stefan, LA0BY and his family for ufb support.
