Prince Georges County: West Virginia Storm Aid - Maryland "hams" respond to
a plea for help from the Federal US Department of Health and Human Services
(HHS), Washington, DC. Elleen Kane, of HHS had asked her husband, an
employee at the Naval Air Systems Command, Paxtauent River, MD, how would
be the best way to get survival information distributed to the citizens of
WV. He contacted a co-worker, Shawn Donely, N3AE, of Calvert County for
advice. Shawn sent an email to the MDC Section Manager, Jim Cross, WI3N,
and two of his Assistant Section Managers, Steve Beckman, N3SB and Wanda
Montgomery, KA3AHI asking for help. After receiving a phone call from
Elleen, Wanda took the lead to help secure the assistance of the Amateur
Radio community in Maryland to pass Public Service Announcements (PSAs)
into WV for distribution by WV "hams" to the residents of storm stricken
residents. In order to accomplishment this task, Wanda, KA3AHI, immediately
sent regular emails to Ann Rinehart, KA8ZGY, Section Manager, Kanawha
County, WV so that as the power and Internet service were brought back on
line, Ann could get these messages relayed to the appropriate entities in
her district for distribution. For further assistance Wanda turned to Al
Nollmeyer, W3YVQ, MDC Assistant Section Manager for the National Traffic
System. Al was able to pass the PSAs into Tucker County, WV via dedicated
traffic handlers of the NTS system. Later on in the event, Wanda received a
telephone call from Ken Harris, WA8LLM Section Emergency Coordinator, Wood
County, WV regarding a phone call he received from Ann Rinehart regarding
the task at hand. Ken was elated to know that an emergency connection
between MDC and WV was in place should it be needed further assistance be
needed. This catastrophic storm affected not only WV but Maryland and
Washington, DC as well. Only four counties in WV escaped the adverse power
conditions and wind damage of this storm. Given the wide spread disaster of
the storm affecting all parties involved, those tasked with passing the
PSAs to the residents of WV, did so as best they could and as quickly as
possible. Nets: Held five regularly scheduled training VHF nets on
146.61MHz on Tuesdays at 1930L. The monthly HF Hospital Net is held the
Wednesday following the third Monday of the month on 3820KHz at 1930L.
Meetings: Monthly meeting held the 3 Monday of the month at the Fire
Services Building, 6820 Webster St, Landover Hills, MD at 1930. Eyeball
QSOs at 1900.
