Welcome and Introductions

I would like to introduce myself for any of you who may not know me and pro=
vide my thoughts on the future of amateur radio clubs and their importance.
My name is Josh Johnston, KE5MHV, and I was first licensed in 2007. While I=
=E2=80=99ve been a member of ARRL since the beginning, I came to ARRL headq=
uarters from Arkansas 4 years ago as the Director of Emergency Management.
I have a background in emergency management and was part of the Arkansas Co=
mmunications Unit Planning Committee before relocating to Connecticut.

=C2=A0
After ARRL Field Services Director Mike Walters=E2=80=99, W8ZY, departure i=
n early December, I was asked to take on the position of Emergency Communic=
ations and Field Services Director.
I worked closely with Mike and was familiar with the activities he was invo=
lved in =E2=80=94 one of which being the Club Newsletter.
I have been the staff liaison for The ARES Letter since joining the ARRL st=
aff and have worked on The NTS Letter since its inception, so I look forwar=
d to continuing this newsletter and growing it even further!
=C2=A0
Ham radio clubs continue to be a very important part of the amateur radio c=
ommunity.
With that, they need to be constantly growing, strengthening, and refreshin=
g.
I encourage clubs to evaluate whether they can sustain another 10 or 20 yea=
rs. I think many clubs do a fantastic job promoting the ham community and h=
aving social meetings every month, but are these things enough to remain ac=
tive and relevant? I also see many clubs who do a great job with testing, t=
eaching, and licensing hams, but overall, there needs to be more follow thr=
ough with helping them once they=E2=80=99ve earned their license.
There are many hams who don=E2=80=99t upgrade their Technician license, kno=
w where to get started once they=E2=80=99ve gotten their license, or know h=
ow to get on the air.
(I hope some clubs used the ARRL 10-Meter Contest this past weekend as an o=
pportunity to get new hams and Technicians on the air and become radio acti=
ve!)
=C2=A0
As we begin a new year, try focusing on promoting your club and protecting =
ham radio by being active in a couple of areas: Be more than a social club =
=E2=80=94 be a club with hands-on activities throughout the year that encou=
rage on-air activities, and include new hams. Engage youth in your ideas an=
d activities, but don=E2=80=99t forget the age groups in between youth and =
older adults; there are many hams in the 30 to 50 age range that could be v=
aluable assets to your club.=20

Feel free to reach out, and I encourage you to help us shine a spotlight on=

Pre-Register for Upcoming Youth Coding Competition

Beginning January 1, 2026, ARRL will be hosting a Student Coding Competitio=
n with awards of up to $25,000! For this national challenge =E2=80=94 geare=
d toward ARRL-member amateur radio operators aged 21 and younger =E2=80=94 =
students will design a mobile app to support the future of amateur radio an=
d ARRL.=20
=C2=A0
Pre-registration is now open at www.arrl.org/student-coding-competition [ h=

um=3DEmail&utm_campaign=3DARRL ] . The full rules and specifications will b=
e released when the competition officially begins on January 1. Project sub=
missions are due March 31, 2026. Entries will be judged on meeting the publ=
ished specs, UI design and usability, code quality, stability, and extra fe=
atures.=20

This contest will be a great opportunity for your club to promote youth act=
ivities and provide a student with the chance to win some money. Adult memb=
ers are encouraged to spread the word to local schools and any youth in the=
ir community. And don=E2=80=99t forget =E2=80=94 ARRL Student Membership is=
 free!

The America250 WAS Challenge

2026 marks a year of many celebrations. In addition to ARRL=E2=80=99s Year =
of the Club, it is also the 250th anniversary of the United States Declarat=
ion of Independence. To honor this milestone, ARRL has introduced a special=
, yearlong Worked All States (WAS) Award, called the America250-WAS. This f=
or-purchase award will be available throughout 2026 via Logbook of The Worl=
d (LoTW), and only QSLs made via LoTW count toward the award.
=C2=A0=20
The America250-WAS Award is earned by confirming contact with all 50 states=
 between 0000 UTC January 1, 2026, through 2359 UTC December 31, 2026. Endo=
rsements for this award include:
=C2=A0=E2=80=A2=C2=A0W1AW/Portable =E2=80=94 Confirm contact with W1AW/port=
able stations in all 50 states (states will be active during two 7-day peri=
ods during the year) on HF, VHF, and above (excluding 60 meters) on all thr=
ee modes (CW/phone/digital).
=C2=A0=E2=80=A2=C2=A0Triple-Play =E2=80=94 Confirm contact with stations in=
 all 50 states on all three modes (CW/phone/digital), regardless of band.
=C2=A0=E2=80=A2=C2=A0Affiliated Clubs =E2=80=94 Confirm contact with Affili=
ated Club call signs (the call sign must be as shown on the ARRL Affiliated=
 Club web page at www.arrl.org/find-a-club [ https://www.arrl.org/find-a-cl=
ub?utm_source=3DInformz&utm_medium=3DEmail&utm_campaign=3DARRL ] . For exam=
ple, contacts made with the Newington Amateur Radio League, W1OKY, count fo=

vide my thoughts on the future of amateur radio clubs and their importance.
My name is Josh Johnston, KE5MHV, and I was first licensed in 2007. While I=
=E2=80=99ve been a member of ARRL since the beginning, I came to ARRL headq=
uarters from Arkansas 4 years ago as the Director of Emergency Management.
I have a background in emergency management and was part of the Arkansas Co=
mmunications Unit Planning Committee before relocating to Connecticut.

n early December, I was asked to take on the position of Emergency Communic=
ations and Field Services Director.
I worked closely with Mike and was familiar with the activities he was invo=
lved in =E2=80=94 one of which being the <em>Club Newsletter</em>. I have b=
een the staff liaison for <em>The ARES Letter</em> since joining the ARRL s=
taff and have worked on <em>The NTS Letter</em> since its inception, so I l=
ook forward to continuing this newsletter and growing it even further!</p>

Ham radio clubs continue to be a very important part of the amateur radio c=
ommunity.
With that, they need to be constantly growing, strengthening, and refreshin=
g.
I encourage clubs to evaluate whether they can sustain another 10 or 20 yea=
rs. I think many clubs do a fantastic job promoting the ham community and h=
aving social meetings every month, but are these things enough to remain ac=
tive and relevant? I also see many clubs who do a great job with testing, t=
eaching, and licensing hams, but overall, there needs to be more follow thr=
ough with helping them once they=E2=80=99ve earned their license.
There are many hams who don=E2=80=99t upgrade their Technician license, kno=
w where to get started once they=E2=80=99ve gotten their license, or know h=
ow to get on the air.
(I hope some clubs used the ARRL 10-Meter Contest this past weekend as an o=
pportunity to get new hams and Technicians on the air and become radio acti=
ve!)</p>

As we begin a new year, try focusing on promoting your club and protecting =
ham radio by being active in a couple of areas: Be more than a social club =

rage on-air activities, and include new hams.
Engage youth in your ideas and activities, but don=E2=80=99t forget the age=
 groups in between youth and older adults; there are many hams in the 30 to=
 50 age range that could be valuable assets to your club.
