This aligns with Colorado State University=E2=80=99s foreca= st for 17 named storms, 9 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes, supported by = warm Atlantic sea surface temperatures. All indications point to an above average season. =C2=A0=20 Tropical Storm Chantal made landfall in the Carolinas with high winds and f= ooding in July. Now, Tropical Storm Erin has formed in the central Atlantic= and is moving west with 45 mile-per-hour winds. Erin is expected to become= the first hurricane of the season by tomorrow, August 15. The award, endowed through = the generosity of William R. Goldfarb, N2ITP, in memory of his parents, Alb= ert and Dorothy Goldfarb, covers a significant portion of higher education = expenses to the awardee. Snethen, who earned many college credits during hi= gh school, will be entering as a freshman at the University of California, = Davis this year. =C2=A0 Snethen got an early start in amateur radio, finding her place in the hobby= through a youth net. =E2=80=9CBack when I first got licensed at 10 years o= ld, I was not as interested in talking to adults. The youth net was the onl= y time I got on the radio because there would actually be someone closer to= my age, and it was really nice to have that connection,=E2=80=9D she said. =C2=A0 When the net control operator of the youth net went off to college in 2017,= Snethen took the reins. She would help other young hams have a safe place = to explore ham radio. In 2019, she was appointed the Section Youth Coordina= tor (SYC) of the ARRL East Bay Section. She developed a Discord server for = the young hams to connect off-air, and frequently organizes youth-oriented = in-person amateur radio events. =C2=A0 When she=E2=80=99s not leading fellow young people, she enjoys the random r= ag chews that happen on the HF bands. =E2=80=9CA week ago, there was a whole conversation about pie. It was just these two guys who were talking about different flavors of pie = and different pie shops =E2=80=93 very random conversation =E2=80=93 but it= was interesting to listen to=E2=80=A6 I pitched in with my own favorite ty= pe of pie,=E2=80=9D said Snethen. Her favorite is coconut cream pie, to whi= ch the other operators took half-hearted umbrage. =E2=80=9CWe had =E2=80=93= not an argument =E2=80=93 it was a debate,=E2=80=9D she quipped. =C2=A0 The fun social engagement Alexia finds in ham radio is a result of her tech= nical knowledge built in the hobby. That foundation has helped set her up for a very serious pursuit in life. =E2=80=9CI enjoy engineering disciplines and want to go into engineering or= a related field,=E2=80=9D she said. Her plan is to study biochemistry or b= iomedical engineering. =E2=80=9CI=E2=80=99m having a really hard time deciding between the enginee= ring and the science side. I really like them both.=E2=80=9D Either one will further her desire to ser= ve others. =E2=80=9CMy goal in life is to help people live better lives. Because of this, I want to work in a health-related field, conducting resea= rch and designing equipment to help people live healthier and more fulfille= d lives.=E2=80=9D =C2=A0 As Lexi, as she is known to her fellow teens, continues to lead other Silic= on Valley youth in their pursuit of ham radio =E2=80=93 she looks up to oth= er hams who mentor her and continue to help her grow in the hobby. She met ARRL First Vice President Kristen McIntyre, K6WX, at a ham radio ev= ent. McIntyre, an accomplished software engineer by trade, took notice. =E2=80=9CI have known Alexia since she was about 10 years old. I have follo= wed her amateur radio career since that time and have always been impressed= with her maturity, willingness to work hard, and her leadership skills,=E2= =80=9D said McIntyre. =C2=A0=20 Her ham license gave her an opportunity to build a network that she enjoys = both socially and professionally. =E2=80=9CAmateur radio was a gateway for me to find my own engineering conn= ections,=E2=80=9D she said. The Goldfarb Memorial Scholarship will help her= educational pursuits significantly. =E2=80=9CThis is going to make it much more likely that I get a master=E2= =80=99s degree. Previously, I was going to have to pay for a large portion = of my 4 years of schooling. ARRL Serving its Members: NU2W=E2=80=99s Story By Phil Temples, K9HI, ARRL New England Division Vice Director The New England Division RFI Team [ https://nediv.arrl.org/spectrum-protect= ion-utilization/ ] assisted Tom Lanieri, NU2W, of North Chelmsford, Massach= usetts, with a significant RFI problem he=E2=80=99s been suffering with for= many years. =C2=A0 Tom writes: =E2=80=9CI moved from central New Jersey ten years ago and knew= from day one that my experiences with HF and amateur radio were doomed bec= ause of the noise and the HOA restrictions. So I dabbled in successfully re= suscitating vintage gear: a full Collins S-line, Drake twins, Heaths, Halli= crafters, Hammarlunds, amplifiers, receivers, transmitters, and all the per= ipherals. It took me over 40 years to acquire reasonably repairable, functi= onal priced radios.=E2=80=9D =C2=A0 Then Tom was introduced to one of the New England Division RFI teams consis= ting of W1DAN, W1EMI, and N2YCH. =C2=A0 =E2=80=9CAfter two-plus years, seven hours, two guest visits, RFI gear, and= more than three-and-a-half hours of travel time for a few, they determined= the very best I could achieve was to try some alternate signal-to-noise im= provement methods,=E2=80=9D Tom recounted. =E2=80=9CWe tried everything. Something is out there=E2=80=94an electricall= y driven noise generator that disappears only with a local power outage. However, I must state for the record that these three technicians, who have= personal employment obligations, found the means to visit me.
