Yes, I had the call sign KN0BYK, It was a one year, I got it at a farmers home near Pawnee City, NE. That was 1955, I was in high school. I had a friend Ron Blecha that is W0 call, he still lives in Minden, still alive, and in 1955 he lived in Pawnee City, NE.
To up grade in 1956, I had to drive to Kansas City FCC office. Then in 1971 I got my Extra License in Kansas City. Norma got her KN0DTT in 1973, did not renew. .... I had a call sign in Germany DL4RI, and was club call DL4OL. President, In Germany, 1958 to 1981 . All I had to do was show my License. Dennis

That was an interesting read Mike, thanks for sharing. My call sign is an example of what took place in the 1950’s. My uncle LR (Leon Russell) originally had the novice call sign KNØKSI and after upgrading it became KØKSI.

73.

Very interesting Mike. I'm looking forward to Dennis's comments.
Speaking of "potentially" old hams, I noted something while visiting the body shop in Frankfort last week. In the middle of the block between the stop signs where 99 drops south and comes from the North, there is a long wire stretched across the street from the south buildings to the north buildings. It appears to be very well insulated and well attached. Anybody know who may have once lived upstairs in one of the old apartments?

Michael, I think the nines got changed to 10 shortly after World War II and this is based on a ham in Manhattan, who was a nine when he went to work at Washington DC during World War II and by the time he got home, his call sign was changed to 10 and everybody thought he was making up his call. This is here say but I think it’s fairly accurate. You might Google it and find out. Hope you have a good day.

Good morning,
Each day is a learning experience. I had a popup that got me searching. I came across another HAM in Seneca. He graduated in 1930, immediately went to radio school in the state of Louisiana, and got a radio engineer job in NY. What I found was a qsl card, but his callsign was area 9 and not area 0. I was puzzled. WC0AA had waiting in my inbox this morning a map of the US callsign areas for 1937. Kansas and 11 other states were area 9. This got me to wondering what the first callsign of Dennis Mason was. Do you have a response, Dennis? P.S. Not saying Dennis is of the antique age of Davidson Vorhes, W9GFO, but the longest licensed living person that I know.
