I saw Bill Pennington at Wally World earlier this week and he said that he had a older HF radio that he was not using and would like to donate it to the MCARC. I was going to Manhattan a day or two later and stoped by his QTH and picked up a nice looking, clean (except for a small amount of dust) Kenwood TS-820S. Bill mentioned the display was not working correctly. After returning home I brought up the 120v slowly over two days and there was no smoke released. The display lit up but was not correct and some digits were missing as the ufo was changed. I did some research on line and most comments were linked to cleaning the pins and sockets on the connections to the display. After cleaning with DeOxit the display worked. Then I checked reception sensitivity and transmission power and both were good. I took the rig to the garage to blow out a small amount of dust under the covers. After returning the rig to the shack the display was not working again. I spent most of the day trying other fixes that I read about on line. After removing the counter and cleaning the pins and sockets between the two boards inside the counter and and reflowing some solder on the connection pins the display is back working well. The radio is very nice with little to no scratches, sounds good on receive and I did make one contact (POTA) on 20m. There is no CW filter and the handle strap on the right side is missing along with the rubber/plastic feet on the left sided. Bill thinks he bought it from Associated radio and has not been on the air for at least 20 or more years. Bill was not sure where the strap went or if it was on the unit when he bought the rig. The club will need to decided what to do with the rig (probably sell) as Bill did not have any conditions attached to his gift. A big thanks to Bill !.I hope you can attend the meeting on 21st. Let me know if you have an interest in the rig. The radio is a hybrid, mostly solid state but tubes for the driver and finals stages.73 ACØIMike
