This morning I was up for a while around 4 AM and saw activity on .520
simplex and turned up the audio. One station had a relatively strong
signal that fluttered which indicated he was mobile. The other was
inaudible for some time. After a few minutes the mobile peaked at full
scale and then I heard him say he was waiting on a train and had
mentioned being headed into Marysville a bit early so I presume they
were on 77.
A few times I could hear the other station but only just breaking my
squelch so I assume he was on an HT. The mobile had considerably lower
audio which might hint at a commercial mobile radio set up for
narrowband operation. The HT user had stronger audio indicative of 5
kHz deviation.
Of course, no callsigns were heard and the language was saltier than
generally used by us licensed ops. The mobile op appeared to be
familiar with Marysville and travel between here and North Platte and
also familiar with railroad operations from his comments.
Just a heads up to everyone.
73, Nate
