We have lost quite a few operators this winter, as well as their
knowledge of radio and life experience.
Among them was Orlan Cook-W0OYH. Orlan taught, encouraged and promoted
our Amateur Radio Service to everyone he encountered. He was a fixture
on our traffic nets and at our convention each year. More than once
Orlan told me of the classes he held in his garage in the 70s as a kind
of after school program. He continued K.A.R. Newsletter, was our
Kansas Section Manager and a Traffic Man. A great contributor to the
Kansas Section, his wisdom and spirit will be greatly missed.

From WD0EUF:
2017 is the 150th anniversary of the CHISHOLM CATTLE TRAIL. An ARC in
the Fort Worth, TX area has organized a special event for the
celebration. The event will last from April 25 to 30. They have been
issued seven 1X1 calls (W5A-G) to be used along the trail by amateur
groups. In 1867 Abilene, KS was the first Rail head in KS to be used.
I will be the contact for operations from the old depot in Abilene.
We have been assigned the call W5A for use during the event.
It should be a challenge to work all seven special event locations
along the 900 miles of the trail. All amateurs are welcome to come and
operate from the Abilene site during the event. Contact me by
K-Link,E-Mail or cell phone to coordinate time and date you would like
to operate. More info is on the trail website:

Page.

We had some state legislation to deal with. A distracted driving bill
had been introduced that affected our mobile operation. Bob-N0MEI
spotted it and notified several of us.
The bill eventually made it through the Senate and was sent to the
House. After several amateur radio operators testified, seeking an
exemption, the bills wording was altered somewhat. In the House
committee, discussion on the bill brought out confusion on what the
bill would actually do. With uncertainty and doubt the bill, upon
voting, died in the committee.
Many of the Representatives as well as most of the Hams felt the bill
was poorly written and not very clear in how it was to achieve its
intent.
Here are some thoughts from Bob-N0MEI who became the point man keeping
SGL-K0RCJ and everyone informed of the activity:
I want to give big thanks for all who helped with this effort and those
who would have helped had you known about it in time. Those of you who
were ready to contact your Representative or Senator about this bill
can stand down at this time and thanks for your willingness to help
out. A special thanks goes to John, KY0C and Brian, KC0BS, who spent
most of the day at the Capitol visiting with Representatives and
Senators on behalf of amateur radio. That initiative along with those
who submitted either written or verbal testimony, or just showed up for
the count, helped to provide some badly needed education about amateur
radio to our lawmakers.
During this process, it became very apparent that the amateur radio
community has been remiss in getting the word out to our state elected
officials on all of the many ways we as amateur radio operators
volunteer our time, equipment and expertise to make Kansans safer, as
well as serve as good will ambassadors for our great state. Over the
next few months, John, KYØC and I are going to work on some
initiatives to help correct this oversight and as plans develop we will
be asking you to join us in this effort.
Bob, N0MEI

Johnson County’s 2017 VHF Shootout drew 10 participants. The antennas
ranged from stock duckies to Yagi’s on the indoor range. Charlie
N0CVW’s home brew 3-element tape-measure Yagi won over the others. A
requirement was that the antenna be mounted to the radio.
Jackson County ARC has been re-activated. Officers for 2017 are:
Richard Smith-W0QGS President; John Zempel-KG4OLG VP;
Ross McClain-AA0MM; Secretary/Treasurer
Huck Keithline-K0HK Activities Manager

Pilot Knob’s Freeze Your Keys QRP Event held outdoors the middle of
February found a lot of DX at 5 watts or less. W0ERI and N0TU provided
Foodservice for the annual outing.
