Kansas Section News Summary September 2016
Silent Keys
N0WNT- Terry McDonald, Topeka
WA0PBQ- Donald Inbody, Overland Park
--------------------------------------
We are well into fall and beginning the indoor season.
The bike rides and marathons are winding down.
But there is still much that can be done outside the shack.
The National Parks On The Air event and contest continues to
the end of the year. You or a group can still activate one of
our Kansas sites. Johnson Co RAC auction is the Saturday before
Halloween, out back behind the house. Antenna work can be done before
snow falls, unless you are a purist that believes in waiting for sleet
and frost bite to string up the BIG antenna. You could also go to a
park, set up QRP and do some Public Relations at the same time.
Get others involved and have fun.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Early in September Douglas County ARC and the Lawrence Public Library
collaborated for an ARISS space station event. The station was in range
for less than 10 minutes, using 2 meter FM, but allowed approximately 15
students to ask Takuya-KF5LKS some very well thought questions. Some of
the kids also asked questions submitted by the general public.
The club did an excellent job of putting this together.
Congratulations to all those involved.
Johnson County RAC auction and fall outing will be held October 29 at
Marshall Ensor Museum and Park, 18995 W 183Rd St. South of Olathe.
There will be a campfire Friday nite. The auction begins Saturday at
11AM. For full details see the clubs website: http://www.w0erh.org
At the KCDX club Jeff-AC0C made a presentation on power supplies,
comparing switching type and linear. He also went over how to modify a
high current computer supply for amateur use. DXers need power !
Patrick-KE0IDD won Johnson Co RAC first UHF shootout back in August.
The church parking lot served as the range. K0WJ, who is himself a
Shootout King, officiated as well as presented Patrick with a plaque.
Emporia ARS will operate their annual Veteran’s Day Special Event
from the 5th thru 11th of November. The club also plans to have a float
in the parade on Friday the 11th. Listen for K0V.
Wheat State Wireless Assn. program was held in the parking lot.
N0SWP brought his service monitor and watt meter to check out members
mobile VHF-UHF transceivers. They all were fairly sensitive. In the
power output category it was discovered one members mobile was only
putting out a fraction of the expected power. Checking transmitters
might be a good club event during fair weather. Few of us have an
accurate VHF wattmeter.
If your group participated in this years Simulated Emergency Test
or still has something in the works, please send your report to HQ:
sewald at arrl.org and copy me please. I put links to a couple of forms at
the bottom of the ARRL Kansas page so you don’t have to dig around.
