Kansas Section News Summary February 2016

Silent Keys

WA0DEA- Vernon Medlam, Wichita
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s only February but many clubs are discussing Field Day.
Scouting locations is something all club members can help with.
FD Falls on a busy weekend and often park shelters must be reserved
well in advance so don’t delay. There are two new ways to receive
bonus points. Promoting your Field Day to the general public via an
active, recognized, and utilized social media platform and Safety
Officer for groups setting up Class A stations. The Safety Officer will
be active during the event. It’s a good idea to have someone
designated for that task anyway. Please read the FD Packet available
now on the ARRL Web.

The deadline for educators to apply for this year’s Teachers
Institute on Wireless Technology is May 1st. March QST has an article
detailing the program. If you know of a teacher or instructor that
would benefit their school from this program please point them toward
the ARRL.

Santa Fe Trail operated Kansas Day this year from the QTH of Del-K0DDS.
With one Sideband and one CW position 10 operators were kept busy
operating or logging for the 5 hours of operation.

Freeze Your Keys ? Not exactly. This year the temperature at Weston
Bend State Park in Missouri was over 70 making for a different outing
for the Kickapoo QRP ARC. A mini-QRP field Day of sorts this get
together is always anticipated to be fun and this year proved true.11
people and 6 operating positions made 90 contacts working 31 states.
Mike-N0TU and Martha-W0ERI provided culinary power for the operation.

Mine Creek hamfest was well attended. There were a couple of cars from
Topeka, Leavenworth and Pittsburg made the trip, Clinton, MO was
represented and Bruce came over from Wichita. WA0ARM-Bill with M.A.R.S.
had a table and Larry-W0AIB was also in the house! Several mini-reunions
took place that day as well. There were some older pieces of gear
available and a Viking and National found new homes.
A very fun morning.

Clint-KB0WTH has the Carbondale repeater up and going with good
coverage. Frequency is 147.300 with 88.5 sub audible tone.
