The 4 State QRP Group has opened up ordering for a new kit called the
Bayou Jumper. It is a 40m CW transceiver kit that features a
regenerative receiver and a crystal controlled transmitter along with a
built-in straight key. It is designed to be installed in a wooden case
available from Hobby Lobby.

As the price seemed quite reasonable (just under $90 including
shipping), I ordered one Monday evening as the announcement was made on
Monday that orders were being taken. Yesterday I picked up a case from
Hobby Lobby in Manhattan ($5.99) and now am waiting for the kit to
arrive and will apply some finish to the case in the mean time.

Complete details and ordering information are available from the 4SQRP
Web site:

It is the regenerative receiver that interests me the most about this
kit. There are number of "gennies" out there that cover much larger
swaths of the spectrum, but this one is designed to cover approximately
7.0 to 7.125 MHz (the 40m CW spectrum). This means it should be easy to
use for communications work than one that covers the entire slice of the
40m CW segment with a bump of the knob! (For those that don't know,
regenerative receivers hearken back almost to the earliest days of
wireless, becoming popular after World War 1 and reaching their peak
popularity in the '20s and '30s, after which Super Heterodyne receivers
gained favor in the more crowded bands, especially after World War 2.)

This may be a good project for the remaining long winter nights.

73, Nate
