Kansas Section News Summary October 2016

--------------------------------------
Propagation conditions the last few weeks have not been the best for us
on 80 meters where three of the section nets are held. After sunset the
band stretches out and communicating within Kansas is very difficult if
not impossible. Central States Traffic Net members know what I’m
talking about. The Kansas Sideband Net is our main gathering point for
bulletins and information for the Section but it is also a public
service net. Message traffic in the form of Radiograms is one of the
seven programs of the League’s Field Organization. We practice the
movement of messages so we can easily and efficiently perform that
function during a disaster. The Kansas Weather Net is also training for
moving information from one point to many in a controlled, formatted
manner.

So, because of these poor conditions I anticipate moving the Sideband
Net up one hour to 5:30 CST temporarily. I also anticipate returning
to normal in February based on past history.

Valley Center ARC sponsored the Wichita Area Hamfest in downtown
Wichita once again. Along with B&H Sales and D&L they had folks
stitching ball caps. Participants came from all over central and
Southern Kansas to meet and catch up on Ham Radio events. Listening on
the Kan-Okla system I heard at least one car load coming up from
Oklahoma. I was pleasantly surprised, however, to see KB0NRG-Ron from
Pittsburg representing S.E.K. ARC

Johnson County RAC Auction and Outing was the place to be. The club has
held an auction at the Ensor Museum and Park for many years and I’m
always amazed at the breadth of the items presented. Late model
transceivers and interesting mystery boxes along with generous
attendees make for a fun morning. If you were looking for tower
sections, signal generators or maybe a mint condition TS-430S you were
in luck. The auction proceeds are split with the museum to help
maintain it and keep it open.

Santa Fe Trail put KS0KS on the air for the NPOTA event. About 20 club
members participated at a roadside park near Gardner where the Santa Fe,
Oregon and California trails split. The club made several hundred
contacts on that Saturday. The Gardner News did a piece on the event
as well.

Hiawatha ARC is celebrating 50 years as a club, 49 as a League
affiliate.

Emporia club members participated in several public service events.
