Reminder: Feburary 17 License Event Today (Saturday)
In addition to filling out a simple form, passing a test of basic radio
technology is all that is needed to qualify for a Technician Class Amateur
Radio license.  The license is issued by the FCC (Federal Communications
Commission) and is good for 10 years.  It is readily renewable at no charge.
HWA offers a license preparation class on the same day as the examination.
The preparation class and examination will be held at Novato Community
Hospital, Saturday February 17. 
The study session begins at 9:00 AM., with an examination to obtain your
license scheduled at 1:00 PM. Examination fee is $15.00. At the License
Preparation Class, you will be given a booklet with questions and correct
answers which we ask you to read up to the time of the test.  Experience
indicates virtually everyone who reads the materials passes the test.
License Prep Class cost is $25.00 which includes the $15.00 examination fee.
The License Class offered by the Hamilton Wireless Association is the first
step in the HWA-sponsored TEAM Radio program. Once you have obtained your
license, we ask you to attend a four-session Communications Class. The
Communications Classes are conducted to assist you with using your radio.
Four class sessions are held in sequence Thursday evenings from 7:00 PM to
9:00 PM at the Boy Scout Center, 225 West End Ave., San Rafael, 94901.  As
part of this program, we ask you to purchase a two-way radio. Cost of the
radio ranges between $35 and $180, with our recommended radio with
accessories well under $100.

Further, there are on-air exercises held every Monday evening from 7:00 to
7:30 in which you can participate from your home. If you know of any
neighbors who would like to join us in our Radio group, please let them know
about the program!  We would like you to help us build an expanding radio
network in your neighborhood as part of a neighborhood response in the event
where telephone and cell-phone services become unavailable.

Directions to Novato Community Hospital:
The License Event will be held at Novato Community Hospital, located at 180
Rowland Way, Novato, CA 94945. License prep and exams are held in the
Wilkes-Weiseman Conference Room IC606, in the Medical Offices Building, 165
Rowland Way.  The building parallels the freeway and is located to the left
of the main hospital building.  Parking is available in the lot immediately
to the left when entering the main Hospital parking lot.
To reach the Hospital, travel on Highway 101. From the north of Novato, exit
on Rowland Way. Turn left and drive over the overpass and continue on
Rowland Way. Note Rowland Way takes a jog: turn left at the second
intersection on the east side of the freeway. The hospital is located at the
end of Rowland Way.
>From the south of Novato on Highway 101, take the Roland Way exit. Turn
right at the intersection and left at the next intersection. The hospital is
located at the end of Rowland Way. Look for the parking lot on the left-hand
side of the main entrance.
