One of our members has purchased the following radio and seems pleased with it's operation. The cost of the radio is almost half of any of the various dual band handheld radios offered by Japanese manufacturers. If you have hesitated in participating with CERT Radio because of the cost of a radio, you might consider the following.

This spring, Wouxun will reportedly make available a clone of the Yaesu FT-8800 mobile radio for about the same cost as the handheld.

This description has been extracted from an eham review (http://www.eham.com):

Radio: Wouxun KG-UV2D

This first thing you need to know, it that there are three frequency variants of the radio, and three models of the radio floating around.

The frequency options are:
136-174 & 216-290
136-174 & 350-470
136-174 & 420-520
As far as I can tell, all three radio have all three frequency options

The KG-UV1D is the plain model that doesn’t appear to have DTMF functionality.

The KG-UV1DP is next, and has the DTMF. But is has a default display configuration, being in channel mode. If you put the radio into name mode, when you turn it off and on again, it defaults back to channel mode. A very minor annoyance.

The KG-UV2D model, imported by www.wouxun.us was upgraded to fix that annoyance. It remembers the mode you were in.

If you order the 1D or 1DP actually from China (via e-bay) they will probably be frequency unlocked to transmit in the entire band. Ed at wouxun.us is importing them (legally), so to make Uncle Charlie happy, the are tx restricted into the ham bands. It is a simple software mod to get them “open” if you are interested. There is also a guy advertising them in QST, www.totalradioservice.com selling the 1DP version.

Ed sells the radios for $107.00 +s/h. There are accessories available on his website, very attractively priced. They are also Kenwood standard, as to the antenna, and speaker mic connections.
