Hi Mike,

Look forward to having you join us in CERT Radio! Regarding the Amateur Radio license, there are three license grades: Technician, General and Extra. Each grade represents an increased knowledge of radio practice and increased operating privileges. The Technician license is all that is needed for CERT Radio.

We offer a one-day license class for the Technician license. I would recommend the class to you because information beyond basic knowledge of electronics such as rules and regulations, band frequencies, and operating safety is covered in the Technician examination.

With the license, and the expectation that you acquire a radio, we then ask you to attend a four-session Communications Class. We conduct the sessions on a continuous, rotating basis every Thursday evening from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The topics covered are (1) what coverage you can expect from the radio and how to keep the radio running. (2) how to configure the radio to work in the Amateur bands. (3) how to self-organize and participate in a radio network. (4) How to transfer information in a message format. We apply this information in our CERT Radio program.

We practice from our homes every Monday evening from 7:00 to 7:30 using the K6BW 2-meter repeater, and also through extended drills. Three drills were conducted in association with MMRC this year, one is under planning for next month (December) and several are planned for next year.

Candidate preparation for the General and Extra Class licenses have been largely undertaken on an individual basis, and is more associated with Amateur activities at the Hamilton Wireless Association. However, several CERT Radio volunteers have gained their General class license and several others have expressed interest in acquiring the General and, in turn the Extra Class licenses. Of course we encourage this interest, and need volunteers who can operate on HF frequencies in addition to the local VHF frequencies used in CERT Radio. Hence the attention toward conducting advanced classes for those license grades. The proposed Tuesday classes will present the information needed to understand the topics covered by questions in the General and Extra class tests.

Hope this clarifies somewhat, and again, look forward to your participation. As always, if you know of others who might be interested, please let them know of the program. We would be delighted to have them join CERT Radio.

Sincerely,

Bill

  Bill,

Thanks for sending out the 2010 schedule with enough advance notice that
I can place this in my schedule. I am planning on the February 13th
  class.

Question: In your experience, is the one class enough for the person
with average knowledge of electronics to pass the examination - or
should I anticipate attending one or more of the Tuesday evening
meetings prior to the Feb. 13th class (as mentioned in another email)?

  Mike 'Doc' Schwartz
