Solar power is of course one power-source alternative to supply power to
radio over an extended time.   Solar panels will likely work best in
conjunction with a rechargeable battery, perhaps of the sealed-lead-acid
variety if portability is a concern.

This is primarily eye-candy, but prices of solar charging products are
coming down.  The enclosed URL describes a 25 watt device, which is probably
larger than needed for powering a handheld transceiver.  There are other,
lower powered devices at the website.
