The question is if you turn on your radio, what will you hear? Or, if you
press the transmit button, who will hear you? These are good questions
which deserve a long explanation, as I am sure others are interested also.

Another group of amateurs has installed a repeater on Mt. Konocti which uses
the same frequencies as the K6BW repeater. Amateurs in the Clear Lake area
(and the Sacramento Valley) can use their repeater without bothering the
K6BW repeater because their signals are blocked by the hills which separate
Clear Lake from Marin County.

Mt. Konocti overlooks Clear Lake and your handheld will transmit a strong
clear signal to that repeater if you transmit on 146.775 (Memory Channel 4).
If you find yourself up on a high ridge with a clear path to Marin County,
it is possible that when you transmit, in addition to triggering the Mr.
Konocti repeater, that your signal will also be heard in our repeater in
Marin. If the signal is heard, the K6BW repeater will also be triggered and
you will be sending your transmission through two repeaters at the same
time.

The PL tone is designed to prevent triggering two repeaters as likely you
only wish to use one repeater to talk through. The two will interfere with
each other since they transmit on the same frequency. The K6BW repeater is
set to respond to 110.9 PL. If you have any other PL tone set in your
handheld, the K6BW repeater won't be triggered even though it may otherwise
pick up your signal well enough to trigger the repeater.

The Mt. Konocti has a different PL, but the operators of the repeater
usually turn the PL feature off so that the repeater will respond to any
signal on 146.775, irregardless of any PL setting. Even though your
handheld is set to operate the K6BW repeater, it will also operate the Mt.
Konocti repeater if you are within its listening range.

Generally, the signal transmitted by your handheld is too weak to reach
Marin County from Lake County. Your transmissions will be blocked by
surrounding hills. Since VHF frequency transmissions travel line-of site,
it is still possible to reach Marin, but only if you are at a high altitude
location in Lake County where you can look over the hills and see Marin
County in the distance.
