Subject: PSK-31 Contact
Peter, KG6MZV and Bill, AB6MT successfully established contact on 80 meters, 20 meters and 10.070 MHz (30 meters) last night at 8:00pm using PSK-31. Distance between stations was perhaps 7 miles. 80 meters turned out to be the best frequency. 20 meters was busy with other PSK-31 signals but it took 15-40 watts to make contact. Various power levels were tried; on 80 power could be reduced to almost zero without affecting copy. Regular equipment was used to make the test.
Parts were traded at the clubhouse this Saturday. The parts list is a bit short. It calls for 4 crystals, but the schematic calls for 5. Also, a 4-uF can should be listed as QTY 2, not QTY 1 as indicated on the parts list. Two ferrite cores are not listed at all. One is a FT-37 with white paint (high stability, 1-40 MHz, Amadon) The other one remains a mystery at present, though it should also be a FT-37 size.
There "may be" (read "probably are") other errors, please double check the list. We still need to find a source or substitute for the FET.
Peter received the PSK-31 Warbler kit from Small Wonder's labs. It looks very good and seems to be well worth $50. Unfortunately, it can't easily be moved without a major investment in crystals. If you know of an inexpensive crystal source for crystals on a MARS frequency, let us know!
80 meter PSK-31 3.580 LSB (Set program tone to 1500 Hz)
40 meter PSK-31 7.035 LSB
20 meter PSK-31 14.070 USB
