I'm beginning to feel cursed. Every portable VHF+ operation I've tried this
year has ended in disaster. Today was no exception.
I got a late start because I got to my favorite hilltop in EN50rl and then
waited for the rain to stop. (The NWS had forecast rain after 1 pm - so
much for that.) The wind was also about 40+ mph up there. I finally got
everything set up but 903 MHz, which I skipped because the wind was too
much for that antenna. I worked W9SNR on 1296 and 10 GHz before a
thunderstorm came up. The worst place to be during a thunderstorm is on top
of the highest hill in the area, so I sat in the car for another half hour.
It finally cleared up and I made a few other QSO's, with K9PW, K2DRH and
W9ZIH. While I was trying to work W9ZIH on 10 GHz, another storm came up,
the wind picked up again and my dish blew over three times and got pretty
badly bent. That was shortly after noon. I gave up at that time and packed
everything up.
At least I made a few QSO's. If I hadn't worked anyone, it would all have
been wasted. I hope the next one is better.
