This was one of the worst contests I've been in yet. I can only think of
one that rivals it. I was only able to operate on Sunday. The hilltop in
EN50rl was a muddy swamp. I probably had a pound of mud on each foot
stomping around up there. The wind was ferocious. It knocked my dish over
twice and my 902 antenna once. (I had one mast with 144, 222, 432 and 1296
antennas on it and another mast with just the 902 antenna on it.) The wind
made it extremely difficult for me to point antennas into any direction
than NNE or SSW.
The worst part was that my 144 and 222 transverters and/or antennas had
serious problems. Signals were far weaker than expected in both directions
on 144 and although I could be heard on 222, I could barely hear on that
band.
I only made QSO's with W9ZIH and K2DRH and called it quits. I couldn't take
it anymore. I got home with all my cables and antennas coated with mud, I
was coated with mud, the inside of my car is still a muddy mess.
I hope the rest of the year goes better.
73, Zack W9SZ
