[Lowfer] Lowfer JH Loop Experiment

John,
This recalls an experiment that I did in early 2002. I made up a 12-foot
on a side diamond-shaped loop, using four #8 THHN wires, with PVC cross
fittings (holes drilled thru the PVC) to keep the wires separated. If
you were to bunch the wires together, the skin effect would apply to the
bundle, and not to the individual wires. Hung the thing from a tree
branch, and stretched it out to nearby trees. The impedance as measured
on the old GR bridge was 0.2 +j18.2 Ohms. Antenna current was 2.1A.
The results were not impressive: Dex (in NC) did copy some fragments in
DFCW60, and had some complete copy in WOLF. That was the farthest it got
-- sigs around New England were OK, though many dB below Bill Ashlock's
200' perimeter copper pipe loop antenna.
I called it the "LL" (legal loop), as it appeared to meet all aspects of
Part 15. Took it down after a month or so, and put up a larger loop (the
Less Legal Loop) which I used here until Bill and I put up the big loop
for my experimental license a few years later.
I've always wanted to duplicate the experiment with big copper -- maybe
2" or 3", but never managed to make the investment. A 50' piece of
flamed-out 3" Heliax would be great - who cares what condition the
center conductor and dielectric are in...
