Robert, I don't know of this is something unique with JPEGs in Argo on
certain machines, as I never save to .jpg anyway. Try GIF instead.
Build 143 and 145 both do occasionally--but very rarely--give a blank
screen in .gif images, in my experience, and it's a much preferable
format for raw captures, for an unexpected reason.
Both JPEG ang GIF are lossy compression schemes, but in different ways.
GIF sacrifices color depth (256 colors, which is plenty for weak signal
presentation) but retains detail without introducing the edge-related
artifacts that JPEG's discrete cosine transform process introduces.
This is one of the secrets of how I can fit larger snippets of screen
captures into the approximately 32 KB attachment limit of this reflector
than most people. I capture in GIF and edit in BMP so that no detail is
lost or artifacts added in the intermediate editing steps.
When I finally have the image the way I want it, only then do I save it
as a .jpg file in Irfanview with the seriously heavy compression. By not
subjecting the image to any compression of detail whatsoever until the
very final step, the resulting image contains less grit and blur, and
the resulting file size is significantly smaller than one that's
originated in JPEG, edited, and saved again. As an example of what I
mean, see the attachment to my December 9 reply in the "185.3 kHz Last
Night in NC" thread. It is much sharper than an image of those same
dimensions ought to be in only 26.7 KB of data.
Hope that helps, and welcome to the group.
