[Lowfer] A History of MedFers

Somewhere in my "archives" I have a nice little QSL from a MedFer then active (ca. late 1980s, if I remember correctly) in the St. Louis area. He had reliably good sigs into S. Wisconsin, and there were persistent (unconfirmed) rumors that was the result of a somewhat QRO operation. If I can readily locate that card, I'll scan and post it in a follow-up email.
At one time, there were many Part 15 stations on the air at about 1610 kHz. especially during the period when realtors used a variety of commercially marketed transmitters to broadcast looped property descriptions which drive-by lookers could tune in one their car radios.
I used to do a lot of weak-signal work on 6m from my old QTH, and had hoped to DX some 49 mHz beacons. For whatever reason, that whole notion never seemed to gain traction. I would be surprised if more than a very small handful were ever put on the air -- I never heard even one.

A couple shown here:

I've had boxes of parts for a VFER at 49 MHz for years, but never put
anything together.
