[Lowfer] A HiFER post from elsewhere....

I reported on the LW Message Board recently about hearing an AM signal a few
hundred Hz above 13560 a couple of times this month. It was just barely
recognizable here as male and female voices.
Most likely it's a quasi-Part 15 operation..."quasi" because, while this
sort of thing has been done legitimately before by a number of
"microbroadcasters" in order to cover a small community (viz Ed Gelinas'
KHFB several years back), someone probably made a few overly optimistic
assumptions this time about how much power they were allowed. (It's less
than you might think for AM mode, because the field strength limit for this
band is specified to be measured quasi-peak, not average.)
Given conditions on the rest of the band on the days in question, and given
that Glenn is a little over a hundred miles from me and hears the station a
bit better, one good guess might be that it's either somewhere here in the
Great Plains, but located a little closer to him than to me. Another valid
guess might be that it's farther away, but either way, probably running
something closer to 100 mW than 1.2 mW ERPD, because it's just able to keep
up with the Part 18 and RFID hash, but not so strong as to suggest the kind
of wattage an intentional pirate would run. Or even some of the "ditters"
and beepers, for that matter.
