Yeah, Norton is kind of pushy.  I've always used only the antivirus, not the 
full package, and I even had to set that for minimal interaction..none of 
that "reputation" stuff, and none of that bragging at every turn what a 
wonderful job it was doing for me.

On the older computer here, last year's Norton upgrade began using up so 
much memory for supposed _background_ scans that it was filling ALL the 
physical RAM and then proceeded to tie up as much virtual memory as it could 
grab, too.  That brought everything to a screeching halt!

You can't just delete Norton, of course, and it's nearly impossible to fully 
uninstall.  But I did disable it from starting, and later found that 
Microsoft Security Essentials is much friendlier toward Windows XP.  I don't 
know if its definitions will be updated any more, though, after XP support 
ends next month.
