That line is in fact the Canada - U.S.A. International Boundary 
line...everything to the south is in the U.S.A.

As you can see, the line snakes through the small islands...some islands 
going to the U.S. and some going to Canada. The boundary line was determined 
in the mid 1800's as a result of what is called 'The Pig War':

Theoretically, I should be in the U.S.A. as I am south of the main boundary 
line for the rest of Canada. The line, as you have noticed, creates a 
peculiar situation for Point Roberts, Washington, in that the only way for 
American citizens to reach it by land is by going through Canada and the 
customs station there. It comes in handy for Canadians living nearby and 
even Vancouverites, who find it a quick trip for much cheaper gasoline and 
produce.
