That's a nice positive way of looking at it! When I was a kid I used to hear 
VE7EH working the CW contests with his Heathkit DX-100. He would always 
remove the VR tube in the VFO so that his single, now very chirpy, would 
stand out from the crowd. It seemed to work as he won many DX and Sweepstake 
Contests from BC with the modest station.
