Thanks Neil.  I don't want anyone to think I'm putting down today's amateur 
digital modes software...just pointing out that there's a risk we may be 
unwittingly limiting what could be done by accepting the early SSB 
compromise as a standard operating procedure.  The solution could be very 
simple.  If more of the sotfware were written to put the offset in a range 
more typical of BFO frequencies, rather than planting it right in the middle 
of the voice spectrum, and if the "dial frequency" recommendations for each 
band were adjusted accordingly, that would make it easier to achieve 
compatibility between users defaulting to SSB bandwidth and those trying to 
give their receivers a fighting chance by employing CW bandwidths.
