The signal from the beacon is quite a bit weaker than, say, the BMC NDB 
was - several 10's of dB, perhaps.  While I can copy it with an SSB 
bandwidth with a slight amount of difficulty, it is practically armchair 
in a CW filter bandwidth (e.g. 300-500 Hz.)

It strikes me that it's roughly on par with the "Z" LowFER beacon 
operated by Pete Smith's, K7ZTM (now SK) several years ago - and I 
believe that it was also located in Layton:  Even though he ran just 1 
watt input, he did have a heavy Litz wire coil, an extensive ground 
plane and a significant top hat.
