That was an invigorating experience! Bob and I switched between BPSK31 and
QPSK31 a couple of times during that hour, and even tried BPSK63 for a
while. We would have attempted more modes, but we were separated by
"denominational differences." My MultiPSK won't do FSK31, and his Digipan
doesn't do PSK10, so we were out of luck.
The three that we did try all produced copy here in SE Kansas. The moment I
could hear carrier from the speaker and see signal on Argo at QRSS3, the
text began flowing, albeit with a few errors...especially around static
crashes. The QRN wasn't terrible, but there was more of it today than
yesterday. (Ironically, Bob, during the next hour 74 kHz quieted down to
almost no noise at all once again!)
Regular BPSK31 did a pretty credible job after I played with the clipping a
little, and QPSK31 did even better, despite being spread out over a bit more
bandwidth. At least, there were fewer false decodes visible. Neither of us
really expected BPSK63 to work, since we were already kind of at the edge,
signal-to-noise wise, and the readout did have a lot more errors, but over
time one could still make out the message.
Makes me kind of eager to try other possibilities for groundwave
communication on this band, such as JASON maybe.
Got to get back to the farm right now, but I'll post more later.
John
