Bravo, Michael on your "perhaps" point. For those using gen coverage LF receivers that's what I did more than a few times: tune for noise and adjust accordingly. If I were setting up a new rotatable loop, say, I'd terminate the loop into a weather proof box at the loop that contained a toroid xfrmr and tuning caps. I used the box mica types.
 
Some would be soldered into the tuned circuit but always had two screw lugs for inserting the final C and I'd monitor progress on the rx for noise peak. Once setup, the process became rote in a flash. But yeah it takes piles of C to reach the basement.

Perhaps just hooking the loop to a wide band LF converter and looking for 
peak receiver noise with a PC waterfall would be easiest. If that result was 
comparable with

a self resonance estimate, you would have two different measurements for 
confirmation.....
