I like it Andy - fun isnt it!
We played with short wire to connector to tree antennae against Full sized dipoles at 5MHz in the Jungles of Brunei (Borneo area) during special forces training back in the early 2000's - I did better on TX with the NVIS dipole back to our base camp (around 200 miles) at all the times of day (and night) -
For the tree (I can only guess the tree type but over 90ft tall) simply we had a small length or wire from the whip output from the PRC style manual tune radio and a (look like welded) nail and phosphur connection - we bashed the pin into the trees outer layer and an acute angle - we had a 15m thrown counterpoise in the other direction - interesting to note my collegues from the Brunei special forces expertly used sling shots to get a line over the branch of a tree and haul up 100ft a small low band vhf groundplane for their local comms back to their base 50 miles - and the terrain was primary jungle and a steep gorges.
The guys got a kick out of our ability to talk long range at Q5 levels 25 hours a day - If I didnt have the way to deploy a full sized dipole (and small loaded dipoles would be too high Q for this and I wouldnt want to be exposing myself during combat) then a tree is an option - though we have deployed sloping wires with or without counterpoises and near every other variation - certainly I can see why small vertical or horizontal whips in dense wet terrain are so lossy.
Weve coupled (loosely by placing a RDT style probe next to the trunk) active probes to trees in most places in the world over the years and the Acacia always gave us the best results and a Coconut palm the worse - (and the most unsafe :-) - go figure
