Hello Warren, A few comments:

Some manufacturers allow you to turn off the motherboard (MB) soundcard
in the BIOS.
Others need special sound card drivers from the MB manufacturer.

What expansion capabilities does the MB have ? PCI or PCIe or ISA, or
what ?

Have you decided on the # bits you will need: 16 or 24 bit sampling ?
How about the sampling rate 48 KHz, 96 KHz, or 192 KHz ?

Consider the modern ESI PCIe soundcards:
MAYA44XTe for 4 channels of input ANS output 24 bit sampling to 96KHz
Juli at XTE for 2 channels 24 bit, 192 KHz sampling

For USB, M-Audio has a 4 channel external soundcard.

Other comments to consider:
The M-Audio Delta-44, PCI, 4 channel to 96 KHz is obsolete and no longer
supported with modern OS drivers.
