Good morning Laurence:   It was not a S/N issue - as quick checks with a local ( 100 mile ) NDB showed almost identical
signals.  On the loop - the signal just disappeared into the background - and on the eprobe the signal was 100% audible copy.
As you could see on the capture of Bob's signal- there was a lot of background level - but the signal just stood out from the noise.
My first thought was that is was a wave angle problem - it was received just past "high noon", so full daylight conditions.
The eprobe base is at 15-20 feet - within 20 feet of some spruce/maple trees - the maples gradually changing colour.
The base of the 12 foot octoloop is at 15 feet - and pointed at the target.
