Another factor likely enhancing daytime MF groundwave--at certain distances,
anyway--is the high solar X-ray flux we've been receiving on the day side
recently. The D-layer is opaque mush, so the path is most likely pure
groundwave, not the usual weak mix of sky- and ground-wave out near the
normal limit of coverage, where the returning skywave tends to be
destructive rather than additive (the skip zone). I've been noticing the
effects on daytime AM BCB, where regional channel stations two states away
here on the Plains have been coming in better than they generally do. (This
sort of listening I can do at the city park, without having to sit under the
chilly antenna in my soggy field.)
