Had a similar experience with Windows 8 and a neighbor too.

Wife and I bought two Windows 7 laptop computers before they were no 
longer available.

Have kept our previous laptop and desktop computers that have Vista 32 / 
64 bit, XP, Win95, and various versions of Dos.

Have had enough time with the Windows 7 to say it is a Super XP in 
disguise. It is more stable, more memory efficient, and much faster. 
Only XP programs I can not use in the Windows 7 world are those programs 
using special memory managers.... and those are rare.

End result is all the ham software I have used in XP and Vista world DO 
run in Windows 7. There are just a few installation techniques to use 
for those programs that wont run with a standard install.
