Hi Tom, Lowfers,
Mitch, of MP fame, built me an e-probe in exchange for some transmitting mica caps I had. I have the unit mounted
on an eight foot length of 3/4 inch PVC electrical conduit above my PV array on the garage roof. It's about 20 feet
above ground, pretty much in the clear. The shield of the RG-6 feed line is bonded to the aluminum frame which
supports the PV array, which of course is grounded.
In the three weeks or so that I've been using it, I've been quite impressed with its performance. I do a lot of Navtex
dxing and had been using a delta-loop of 111 feet per side, series tuned and transformer coupled to the feed line.
The e-probe seems to be pulling in most of the stations that the loop did, save for a few along the Pacific coast.
For someone in a situation like yourself, it will allow you to still be an active listener/watcher.
