Good question. With active antennas using DC power couplers other than the
Clifton Labs Z1203, yes. Using the Z1203 coupler, the improvement, if any,
is less noticeable. The reason being (I believe) is that the Z1203 isolates
the receiver output so that the coax shield to the receiver is not
connected to the coax shield that goes out to the antenna. This is the best
feature of the Z1203, IMO, and John Reed noted in his VLF/LF active antenna
comparisons (as published by the LWCA) done at his QTH that the signal to
noise ratio of every antenna he tested was improved by the Z1203, so much
so that it often made the difference between hearing or not hearing the
signal.
With that said, 5 of the toroids I mentioned, 15 feet of RG-174, and a tube
of glue are less expensive than the Z1203, even in kit form.
I use both. ;-)
