I had a similar experience when visiting Pikes Peak in July
1989....Approaching T-storm
so I had to disconnect the antenna from my Echo II 2m SSB radio and soon
arcing was
almost continuous between the PL-259 center pin and shell along with a
continous crackle from
every other gap between the rusty spot welds in my old Plymouth. Wife made
a dash from
the gift shop just before the "Stay in Car" announcement and a 1~2" arc bit
her
when reaching for the car's door handle.....

The stormed passed in 20~30 minutes. I thought the car's electrical system
might have been damaged--but
it started right up. A 6 or 7 on the 1~10 scary scale....at least for me...
